Hoe ijs eten begon/How eating ice cream started

Note: After reading several posts and watching several videos this is how I think we started eating ice cream!

The first people that made ice cream were the Persians. They made ice cream by mixing snow with grape juice around 500 before Christ . They kept the ice cream in a "yakhchal", a room underground, and ate it in the summer.

We know that the Chinese mixed snow with rise and milk around 200 B.C..

The Roman emperor Nero sent slaves to the mountains. They needed to get snow, run back, mix it with fruit and honey and serve it before it melted.

Around 800-900 the Arabs made the modern recipe, they used milk and sugar as basic ingredients. Ice cream made by milk, cream, sugar, flavoured rose water, fruit and nuts was eaten all over Arab lands.

Late in the 13th century Marco Polo (1254-1324) returned from China. He brought a recipe of ice cream with him to Italy. Ice cream was popular in Italy only but when Catherine de Medici (1519-1589) married the France king Henri II (1519-1559), Ice cream became popular in France and quickly all over Europe.

Some say that the master chef of Charles I lost his head just after his famous recipe started circulating in public. He died because he broke his oath. He swore never to reveal it but others say that the master chef of Charles I sold the recipe to noblemen after Charles I lost his head. Who lost his head (first) is the question, we only know that somebody lost his head!

In 1744 Scottish colonists brought the recipe to North America. George Washington loved ice cream. They found a bill of almost $200 which all was spent on ice cream. The presidents after him loved ice cream too but Dolly Madison (wife of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States of America) was the first to serve it on an official diner.

Nancy Johnson's ice cream maker
In 1846 Nancy Johnson invented an ice cream maker to be used by hand. This together with the invention of
the portable freezer was the beginning of the commercial ice cream production.

Ice cream cones were served first at St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. They say that a Syrian waffle maker helped an ice cream seller/maker who didn't have dishes left. The waffle maker began rolling waffles into cones.

Ice cream really became populair when it was normal  for most people to have a refrigerator. Now there was a large market for ice cream.

In the 20th century soft ice cream was invented. It was ice cream mixed with air, this was cheap. This made ice cream even more popular.

And thats how we started eating ice cream!
